Description
AST (aspartate aminotransferase), sometimes labeled SGOT, is an enzyme involved in amino-acid metabolism. It’s found in the liver, but also in skeletal muscle, heart, and other tissues. That matters because AST can rise from liver injury or from muscle stress—so interpretation should always consider the full context and companion labs.
Why it matters
AST is commonly measured in a comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP) or liver panel to screen for liver inflammation or injury. It’s most informative when interpreted with ALT, alkaline phosphatase, bilirubin, and clinical history (alcohol, medications, viral risk, training load).
What higher results can suggest (general education)
Liver-related: fatty liver disease, viral hepatitis, alcohol-related liver injury, medication/supplement effects.
Muscle-related: heavy resistance training, endurance events, muscle injury; these patterns often also raise CK (creatine kinase).
Practical interpretation
If AST is mildly elevated, a common first step is to review recent intense exercise, alcohol intake, and medications/supplements, and repeat the test under typical conditions. Persistent elevations usually prompt a broader workup guided by a clinician.
