Description
Muscle Mass estimates how much of your body is made up of skeletal muscle (contractile tissue). It’s a meaningful longevity and function metric because muscle supports metabolic health, mobility, balance, and resilience during illness or aging. Most consumer devices estimate muscle mass indirectly via bioimpedance and body-weight models—so trends and consistency matter more than the exact number.
Why it matters
Higher (appropriate) muscle mass generally supports:
Better glucose disposal and insulin sensitivity
Higher resting metabolic rate
Strength and functional independence
Low muscle mass can reflect inactivity, under-eating (especially low protein), illness, aging-related sarcopenia, or inadequate resistance training stimulus.
How to interpret it
Track muscle mass alongside strength performance (progressive overload), protein intake, sleep/recovery, and overall weight trend. A favorable pattern is maintaining or increasing muscle while body fat decreases or stays stable.

Hydration shifts can change impedance-based readings. Measure under consistent conditions (same time of day, similar hydration, similar pre-measure routine).
